Introduction to Malaysia’s Marine Heritage
The goal is to run a comprehensive EE program with at least 4 schools in Pendas/ Gelang Patah area – primary & secondary (more if possible) that will span a year each.
Objectives
· To create an awareness of Malaysia’s marine assets amongst Malaysian children – especially those living by the sea (whether coastal or island children)
· To encourage an appreciation for our marine, coastal and island heritage and its importance to our future
· To teach local children skills that will enable them to protect and conserve their environment
· To empower local children with knowledge and skills so that they believe that they can make a difference in the protection and conservation of their village, coastline or island’s natural environment
· To guide children and youth towards actively protecting and conserving their marine ecosystem
Program Tools and Rationale
· Talks – to introduce students to general information
· Activities – to allow for more interaction between students and with facilitators; to encourage a hands-on experiences in the environment; and to internalize lessons learnt
· Coastal, mangrove, seagrass excursions – outdoor experiential classroom
· Beach-clean ups – first hand experience and understanding of marine debris
· Interviews (by the children with older village members) – to learn about the state of the environment in times past
· Presentations & performances (by the children) – to further internalize lessons learnt and instill self-confidence
Time Span
10 months – 1 visit of at least 1½ days per month – dependent on ecosystems available on site
